Google AI Overviews
Google AI Overviews are the AI-generated answer summaries that appear at the top of many Google search results, above the traditional list of links. They synthesize an answer from multiple web sources and show a small set of cited links, so a query can be resolved without the user ever scrolling to the classic results.
AI Overviews grew out of Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE), which launched as an experiment in 2023 and rolled out more broadly under the AI Overviews name in 2024. They sit at the very top of the results page for eligible queries and are generated per search, drawing on Google's index and its Gemini models.
For a source, the mechanics that matter are retrieval and citation: an Overview pulls from pages Google has indexed and attaches a handful of links to the sources it leaned on. Being one of those cited links requires ranking well enough to be in the retrieval set and having content clear and specific enough to be worth quoting in the summary.
AI Overviews change the shape of a results page rather than replacing it, the ten blue links still exist below. But because the Overview answers many questions in place, the value of being cited in it, or of owning the follow-up queries it can't fully answer, has risen relative to a mid-page ranking.
For a store, AI Overviews commonly appear on the research questions buyers ask before a purchase, "how to choose," "is X worth it," "best type of Y." Being cited in the Overview puts your brand at the very top of the page at the exact moment a buyer is forming their shortlist.
The path to being cited is the same content discipline GEO rewards everywhere: rank for the query, then answer it directly and specifically enough that Google's summary wants to quote and link you. Strong structured data and clean, question-led sections help Google understand and lift the answer.
Illustrative scenario: a buyer searches "are merino wool socks worth it," and an AI Overview summarizes the pros and cons, citing three sources. A store whose sourced, question-first guide is one of those citations earns a top-of-page brand impression before the buyer sees any competitor.
What are Google AI Overviews?
They're AI-generated answer summaries at the top of Google's results, above the classic links. Google composes them per query from indexed sources and its Gemini models, and attaches a few cited links to the sources used.
Are AI Overviews the same as SGE?
AI Overviews are the productized evolution of Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE), which began as a 2023 experiment. SGE was the label for the earlier experimental phase; AI Overviews is the broader rollout.
How do I get cited in an AI Overview?
You generally need to rank in Google's index for the query and have content that answers it directly and specifically. Clear question-led sections, consistent facts, and structured data make your page easier for Google to summarize and cite.
Do AI Overviews hurt my organic traffic?
They can reduce clicks on informational queries that the Overview fully answers, while raising the value of being cited within it or of owning purchase-intent queries. The impact varies by query type, which is why it's worth tracking.
Which queries show AI Overviews?
They appear most on informational and research-style queries where a synthesized answer helps, and less on straightforward navigational or transactional ones. Coverage changes over time as Google adjusts where Overviews trigger.
